The combination of video gaming and man clothes brings me much joy in life, so when Claire bought me a space invaders t-shirt last Christmas I was, to say the least, a happy man.
This coupled with a recent discovery of ‘space invader’ street art, has spurred me into a new photo project.
For those of you who, like me, haven’t heard of the 'Space Invader' art project it was started by a French street artist named ‘Invader’ who coordinated a planet-wide invasion of street art in the form of little mosaic tiles in the shape of the pixilated aliens from the classic 1978 arcade video game. The project started in 1998 in Paris and from there spread across many other cities and countries (the website has a full list of invaded locations and the wiki page has a little more info )
London has, I believe, been ‘invaded’ eight times with a total of 101 tiles being installed. Some of the tiles are no longer on display due to weathering, removal, etc but I was not going to let this deter me from my project!
I mentioned the whole thing to Claire last week and to my surprise she already knew about the art work and revealed, much to my delight, that she passes one everyday on her way to work!
Well that was it…. I had a starting point and an action plan, some more research soon showed another three located in Soho and two in East London so with street names and camera in hand we were off!
We only hit the Soho area but with relative ease managed to find four of the little buggers, sadly we discovered that two had been removed but happily found some bonus shots of other invader style art dotted about.
So now my plan is to try and find as many as possible – obviously this will be a long term thing, so I will post the pictures as and when they are discovered!!! Of course I’m only one pair of eyes and spend 90 percent of my time in London so any help in locating the little critters would be very welcomed!!
I hope you enjoy the images captured so far, and remember to keep your eyes pealed on your daily commutes!
